Educational Opportunities for Employees, Dependents, and Spouses

  • Auburn University and Auburn Montgomery maintain an educational benefit plan that provides for tuition waiver benefits to eligible and qualified employees, enabling them to enroll in undergraduate and graduate course work while actively employed at either institution.

  • This benefit provides eligible employees a waiver of tuition for up to 15 hours per academic year (graduate and/or undergraduate courses).

  • Full time employees who have served a minimum of one year of regular continuous service are eligible.

  • If the tuition for the chosen program exceeds the cost of regular tuition, the employee is responsible for paying the difference, per credit hour (based on meeting eligibility requirements and subject to supervisor/manager approval).

  • Auburn University manages the tuition remission benefit plan in accordance with the Internal Revenue Service regulations and the Section 127 Plan.

Application Processes

Online Registration
To register for either benefit, complete the following steps:
  1. Go to

  3. Enter your username and password.

  4. Click on the Self Service icon (Banner).

  5. Select Employee Education Benefit and Dependent Benefit.

  6. Select either Employee Education Benefit or Dependent Benefit.

  7. Complete the application as directed.  For the Dependent Education Benefit, documentation providing proof of the relationship must be provided before the request can be approved and you must be on a university network computer to upload these secure documents to the DEB portal.  You may revisit the site to monitor the progression of your application; however, you will also receive an email at each stage of progression.

Important Notes

  • An Employee Education Benefit application is needed for each class each semester. 

  • Auburn University Montgomery (AUM) requires dependents attending classes at AUM to register each fall semester.  Auburn University dependents only need to apply once.

  • Full-time employees utilizing the Employee Education Benefit who are taking undergraduate level courses no longer have to wait until seven days prior to the start of the term to enroll in classes.

Education Benefit Facts

  • Auburn University offers a 50 percent tuition waiver to the spouses and dependents of AU faculty and staff for undergraduate-level courses.Dependent eligibility is based on the dependent meeting the eligibility requirements for dental insurance coverage under the University's group dental insurance plan. This tuition waiver does not apply for graduate and doctoral-level courses.  This plan is in accordance with 26 U.S. Code § 127. You may wish to consult with an accountant regarding potential tax implications. 
  • Auburn University allows active full-time, regular employees to request to enroll in University courses. The Employee Education Benefit covers the cost of regular, on-campus, in-state tuition for up to 15 credit hours per academic year for employees who have worked full-time for the University for at least 12 months.  Eligibility is effective the semester immediately following one year of continuous employment.  If the tuition for the chosen program exceeds the cost of regular tuition, the employee is responsible for paying the difference, per credit hour.  (Based on meeting eligibility requirements and subject to supervisor/manager approval.)

  • Graduate courses are included in this plan. However, the benefit may be subject to taxation if the course hours are not relevant to the Participant’s current position assignment.

  • Distance learning/online courses that are offered at Auburn University are eligible for the benefit. These include the following Auburn Online Programs:

    • Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA)

    • RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN) 

    • Bachelor of Computer Science (BCS) 

Application Fee Waivers

  • Employees applying for admission to the University are eligible for a waiver of the undergraduate and graduate admission application fee.

  • To receive the waiver of the undergraduate fee, employees should:

    • Submit the online admission application up to the point of the application fee payment

    • Send a copy of the faculty/staff ID card to Admission Processing, 1550 East Glenn Avenue, or email a copy to

    • After a copy of the faculty/staff ID card is received, Admission Processing will complete and submit the application on behalf of the employee.

    • This fee waiver is for faculty and staff only. It is not extended to spouses and dependents.
