Employee Appreciation Week 2019

Auburn recognizes employee contributions during Employee Appreciation Week

President Steven Leath said that Auburn University’s employees are the “lifeblood” of the institution.

“We have a great group of caring, dedicated people with high standards,” Leath said at the Employee Recognition Program, which was held on April 25. “It’s really the culture at Auburn that makes this university stand apart, that makes it different from a lot of other universities. That culture is created by people.”

More than 500 people were recognized at the program, including the four Employee of the Year recipients:

  • Juanita Dowdell of the College of Architecture, Design and Construction
  • Jeffrey Gulledge of Facilities Management
  • April McFarlin of Human Resources
  • Marilyn Floyd of University Libraries

Each recipient received $3,000. Other Spirit of Excellence recipients, recent college graduates and service award recipients were also recognized. The Auburn University Foundation sponsored the event.

The program and several other events were held to commemorate Employee Recognition Week, which was held April 22-26.

There was plenty of laughter along with personal and professional development opportunities for the 234 attendees at the Administrative Professionals’ Day Conference. Keynote speakers Thom Gossom Jr. and Jamie Brown, along with several breakout speakers, spoke to the conference theme of “Happy, Whole and Healthy.”

“Each one of us gets to write the film of our life. Do you allow yourself to write a happy ending?” said Gossom, an actor, writer, speaker, communications consultant and Auburn University alumnus.

“The key to being happy is knowing that you have the power to choose what to accept and what to let go,” said Brown, vice president of relationship development at MAX Credit Union.

Approximately 1,200 employees attended the Employee Appreciation Picnic Lunch at Ham Wilson Arena. Attendees enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs and beautiful weather. Sponsors included University Outreach, Facilities Management and Flowers Bakery.

To commemorate National Walk at Lunch Day, 137 employees participated in lunchtime walks. The 30-minute walks occurred at the AU Employee Pharmacy, Facilities Management, College of Veterinary Medicine and the AU Administrative Complex. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama sponsored the event.

On Department Appreciation Day, several departments and units recognized their employees by hosting breakfast and/or picnic meals, games, music and many more events. The Auburn Alumni Association, with the assistance of Aubie, distributed hundreds of bags of popcorn to faculty and staff.

Employees and departments are encouraged to email Employee Appreciation Week photos to univhr@auburn.edu, and share photos via Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #auappreciation.
