Minutes of the Auburn University Steering Committee
March 6, 2014

 

Present: Chair Larry Crowley, Chair-Elect Patricia Duffy, Secretary-Elect Gisela Buschle-diller, Mike Baginiski, Laura Plexico, Larry Teeter, Associate Provost Emmett Winn, Secretary Judy Sheppard. Absent: Don Mulvaney.

The minutes of the last steering committee were approved.

Larry Teeter asked why Beth Guertal’s presentation on parental leave, originally designated for the March 4 meeting, had been postponed. Larry Crowley said that more research was needed.

The committee discussed the possibility of imposing a time limit on speakers at Senate meetings. 

Emmett Winn said that the Rules Committee urgently needs to complete the membership of the Promotion and Tenure Appeals committee. Larry Crowley said the Rules Committee is looking at possibilities and planned to forward names soon.

The committee set the agenda for the General Faculty Meeting on March 25. Items discussed included President’s remarks; presentation of the AAUP Academic Freedom award; an update on the Honors College; Don Mulvaney’s report on the progress on the Teaching Effectiveness Awards; Larry’s remarks; and Patricia’s announcement of the next Chair-Elect and Secretary-Elect.

Laura Plexico brought up the issue that the Auburn University/Blue Cross/Blue Shield was not providing additional benefits for autism. Larry Crowley said the issue should go to the Insurance and Benefits Committee.

He noted that the site for voting for new officers would open on Monday, March 17 and close on Monday, March 24 at 5 p.m. He suggested that Secretary Judy Sheppard send out a few reminders on au-profs about the vote.

The meeting ended at 4 p.m.
