Minutes of the Steering Committee Meeting

In Attendance:  Claire Crutchley, Jim Wright, David Shannon, Kathryn Flynn, Emmett Winn (for Mary Ellen Mazey), Bob Locy, Larry Crowley, Dennis DeVries, James Goldstein (non-member, AAUP President)

Absent:  Bill Hames, Russ Muntifering

--The meeting was called to order at 3:30 PM

--The minutes of the 17 May 2010 Steering Committee meeting were approved without change. 

--The AAUP has proposed a change to the Faculty Handbook in Chapter 3 relative to the section on Academic Freedom.  James Goldstein provided reasons for the proposed change relative to the Garcetti decision.  The committee discussed the proposed change.  Questions included whether to bring this to the Senate in June, whether there were changes to be made to the proposal, and who would present it. 

--We are waiting to hear from Michel Smith (chair of the Non Tenure Track Instructors Committee) concerning the changes to the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer document.  Claire will forward anything she receives to the Steering Committee. 

--We discussed the Ombudsperson’s office and the need for approving its continuation in the Senate, along with the need to do another search. 

--We then turned our discussion to the June Senate meeting agenda. 

--The meeting was adjourned at 4:50 PM.
