Substitute Resolution Concerning the Removal of "Interim" from Interim President Title

Whereas, the 1966 Joint Statement on Government of Colleges and Universities formulated by the American Association of University Professors, the American Council on Education and the Association of Governing Boards affirms the importance of shared governance in the selection of a new president by noting that “the selection of a chief administrative officer should follow upon a cooperative search by the governing board and the faculty, taking into consideration the opinions of others who are appropriately interested;” and

Whereas “Auburn University recognizes its moral and legal obligation to provide a work environment in which employment opportunities are open to all qualified individuals without discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, age, religion, national origin, disability, or disabled veteran/Vietnam era veteran status” in  the “recruiting, hiring, training, retaining, and promoting individuals, in all job classifications” with the use of well-defined recruitment procedures for this purpose; and

Whereas in a memorandum dated August 15, 2001, the Interim President of Auburn University reaffirmed the University’s policy of employment opportunity specifically noting that this policy applies to “all job classifications”; and

Whereas, the Auburn University Senate resolved to postpone any presidential search until the completion of a SACS investigation of alleged misconduct by the AU Board of Trustees;

Therefore, be it resolved that the Auburn University Senate strongly opposes the removal of the word “Interim” from the current chief administrative officer’s title; and

Be it further resolved that once the SACS investigation is completed, the Board of Trustees will work cooperatively with the faculty to conduct a search for a new president,  abiding by the both the letter of and spirit of the Auburn University Equal Employment Opportunity policies and the tenets of shared governances.
