Adjournment:
CHILD
CARE AT AUBURN
Last March, I did a presentation concerning the possibility for an on-campus child care facility. Dr. Muse and Lynne Hammond, his assistant, were surprised that this was identified as an employees issue. I met with Ms. Hammond and I found our for the first time (as did my colleagues on the Faculty Welfare Committee) that there is already a system in place taking care of the A.U. Employees child care needs. It is called Employees Child Care Alliance and its director is Ms. Gail Piggott. Apart from Auburn University, the following other local employers participate in the E.C.C.A.: Alabama Power Company, A.U. Hotel and Conference Center, Auburn Bank, Briggs and Stratton, City of Auburn, East Alabama Medical Center, East Alabama Mental Health, Quantegy, So. Union Community College, Uniroyal-Goodrich and Vermont American.
After discussing the matter during
our committee meetings, most of us concluded that there are two specific needs
which the E.C.C.A does not meet: infant
care (newborns to six-months) and emergencies
(when the regular day-care will not take the child because she/he is
sick).
We contacted Ms. Piggott, and she
met with us. She identified two
limitations we had to consider: One is that Auburn University will not take
business away from the town and this is what an on-campus facility would
partially do (East Alabama, though, has its own facility in addition to their
participation in the Alliance). The
second limitation is the cost. According
to a study the Alliance did in January 2000, it would cost
$881,936
to run a facility like this and its projected income would be $725,640. This means a deficit of $156,296.
Ms. Piggott also mentioned that in
Winter 2000 there was a survey distributed randomly to A.U. employees, which was expected to identify additional
child care needs not yet met by the Alliance.
The results would come out at the end of the Spring term. Our committee, however, realized that the
survey could not be representative of these needs as it must have reached
employees who are not parents or do not intend to become parents but did not
reach all the parents.
What I want the various senators to take back to their departments is the information about the Employees Child Care Alliance. Ms. Piggot repeatedly stressed
that
unless certain needs are identified by the employees, the Alliance cannot take
any action towards meeting them. Her
address is: Gail Piggott, 3766 Pepperell Parkway, Opelika, AL 36801. Her telephone number is 749-8400 and the FAX
number is 749-9398

Academic Standards Committee
DATE: August 28, 2000
SUBJECT: Report from the Academic Standards Committee
On
August 21, 2000 the Academic Standards Committee voted on two proposals
submitted from the College of Human Sciences and John Fletcher,
respectively. Two separate motions to
accept the proposals as submitted were presented before the committee and
passed with one abstention, and one dissention on the second.
1.)
College of Human Sciences Proposal:
Original
request presented:
The faculty of the college of Human Sciences request
that the following minimum grade requirements be implemented for all on-campus
transfer students entering the Apparel Merchandising, Design and Production
Management, Human Development and Family Studies, Hotel and Restaurant
Management, and Nutrition and Food Science curricula effective Fall Semester
2000. As you are aware the Interior
Design major in the Department of Consumer Affairs already requires that
students have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 to file an application (see page
9 of current Auburn University Bulletin).
Admission to the College. Students may transfer into
Apparel Merchandising, Design and Production Management, Human Development and
Family Studies, Hotel and Restaurant Management, and Nutrition and Food Science
from another college or school on campus if they have attained an overall GPA
of at least 2.00 on all courses attempted at Auburn University.
The Interior Design (INTD)
program in the College maintains the right to limit enrolment. On- and off-campus transfer students must
meet criteria listed in the Academic Policies section of the Auburn University
Bulletin and must file application with the Department of Consumer Affairs no
later than the May 15 deadline.
2.)
Enrollment Management Proposal:
Original
Request Presented:
During the discussions regarding the undergraduate
continuation in residence requirements for the Semester system, the Academic
Standards Committee recommended that a standard be established for seniors and
fifth year students that is above a 1.90 cumulative GPA. Part of the discussion regarding setting
this criterion at 1.974 as the required minimum for continuation was based on a
concern regarding how the OASIS system rounds grade point averages. On July 25 Dr. John Pritchett, Dr. Linda
Glaze, Dr. Nick Backscheider, Ms. Joyce Griffin and I were called together by
Provost Walker to discuss issues regarding rounding. One of the issues that was discussed was the criterion for
seniors and fifth year students. It was
the recommendation of the group that the Academic Standards Committee consider
changing that criteria to a 1.97 to keep all the criteria at two decimal
places.
