Auburn University's Electrical Distribution Department converted campus traffic signals from the standard 150 Watt bulb fixtures to the L.E.D. type. This project was completed in March 2005 and eleven fixtures were replaced. The old fixtures used 1,020 Watts continuously per fixture. The new L.E.D. fixtures use 170 Watts continuously.

Cost of Operating Old Style Fixture:
1,020W * (1kW/1000W) * (8,760 hrs/1 year) * ($0.05/ kW*hr) = $446.76
Cost of Operating New Fixture:
170W * (1kW/1000W) * (8,760 hrs/1 year) * ($0.05/kW*hr) = $74.46
Savings per Fixture:
$446.76 – 74.46 = $372.30
Total Savings of Project per Year:
$372.30 * 11 fixtures = $4,095.30 per year
