District Energy Plant Operations

John McGuckin Superintendent (334) 844-9585
David Howell Supervisor (334) 844-9585

District Energy Plant Operations operates and maintains the District Energy Plants and their distribution systems that provide chilled water, hot water and steam for building cooling, heating, hot domestic water, and steam processes. Plants under their preview include:

  • Chilled Water System. The Chilled Water System is an underground closed loop system. 40 degree chilled water is produced and sent to the buildings on campus for air conditioning then the water is pumped from the buildings back to the plant to be chilled for use again. Plant capacity is as follows: (click here to download the AU Main Campus Chilled Water System Plan)

Main Campus

Chilled Water Plant I: 4,000 Tons
Chilled Water Plant II: 8,500 Tons
District Energy Plant I: 10,000 Tons

Vet School Campus

Chilled Water Plant III: 4,930 Tons

  • Hot Water System. The Hot Water System is an underground closed loop system. 225 degree hot water is produced and pumped to the buildings on campus for heat and hot domestic water, and then the water is pumped from the buildings back to the plant to be heated for use again. Plant capacity is as follows: (click here to download the AU Main Campus Hot Water System Plan)

Main Campus

Hot Water Plant I: 2,400 Boiler Horsepower (Water)
District Energy Pant I: 3,000 Boiler Horsepower (Water)

Vet School Campus

Hot Water Plant II: 900 Boiler Horsepower (Water)

  • Steam System. The Steam System is an underground closed loop system. 100 psi steam is produced and sent to various buildings on campus for heat, domestic hot water, and processes. Once the energy is transferred, the steam is condensed and pumped back to the plant to be heated for use again. Plant capacity is as follows:

Main Campus

Satellite Steam Plant: 750 Boiler Horsepower (Steam)
Coliseum Steam Plant: 1,000 Boiler Horse power (Steam)
