Campus Recycling Bins

No Green CanIf you have the green recycle bin at your desk, the material you put in it is NOT being recycled – it is being put in the trash.  This is the ONLY type recycling bin on campus that is being treated as trash.  Why?  The desk-side bins with GREEN labels collected material single-stream, or mixed recycling.  This program no longer works because the local single-stream market dissolved when the economic downturn in 2008 impacted recycling markets worldwide.  Auburn no longer has a viable option for recycling single-stream material.  Recycling must be separated before it can be sent to market.

blue bin - mixed paper onlyThe new recycling system is dual-stream, where you must use one bin for mixed-paper only and another bin for bottles and cans mixed together.  Cardboard is collected separately from both paper and bottles/cans.  The Waste Reduction and Recycling Department is in the process of changing from single-stream to dual-stream in campus buildings.  If you have a desk-side bin with a blue mixed-paper decal, then the mixed-paper IS being recycled.  Please DO NOT put bottles and cans in the mixed-paper only bin.  Bottles and cans go in the slim-jim containers explained below.
