Auburn University faculty, staff, and students on the northwest side of campus will soon have another snack and beverage option.  Construction has begun on the new Lowder Hall Student and Faculty Lounge.  The 3,200 square-foot facility is located on the east side of Lowder Hall, near W. Magnolia Avenue and will feature a full-service Starbucks and outside seating in an adjacent courtyard.

Rabren General Contractors of Auburn was awarded the project last month. Unlike most campus construction projects, which are executed during daylight hours, construction on this project will occur from 12 noon to midnight or into the very early morning hours.

“We specified this unique schedule in the bid documents so that we could minimize the construction noise exposure for nearby building occupants,” said Wendy Peacock, Facilities Management Construction Project Manager.

“So far, we haven’t received any major noise complaints from faculty, staff, or students, so we believe this strategy has been beneficial,” added Peacock.

To date, new storm and sanitary sewer lines have been installed on the construction site. The mechanical and electrical rough-in work has been completed and the concrete footers have been poured. The foundation is expected to be poured this week, followed by the installation of structural steel.  The project is slated for completion in July 2014.

“For engineering students, it will be so easy to just walk over to Starbucks. I really wish I was going to be here to enjoy it. I’m a senior,” said Trey Gross, Mechanical Engineering student.
