FM maintenance staff use mobile app to better serve campus customers

Facilities Management Information Technology (IT) has deployed a mobile app to staff who work in the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Electrical, Plumbing, Preventive Maintenance, and Carpentry shops. The iDesk app provides real-time work order information to FM staff as they are working on campus. Supervisors and assistant supervisors run the iDesk app on campus-owned iPhones, whereas other FM staff run the iDesk app on campus-owned iPods. Both types of devices allow the iDesk app to interface with the existing Work Order Management System via the campus WiFi network.
"I don't want customers to think I’m playing games when I’m using my iPod," said Mechanical Shop HVAC technician Chris Potts. "The new application has increased my productivity as a result of receiving work orders on my iPod. The software application is saving me time because now I can look up the details about the work orders. I don’t have to call the office and wait to obtain more information about the project," said Potts.
In addition to increased productivity, staff say they are also better able to record the progress of a project and keep everyone up-to-date.
"With iDesk, I can communicate the status of a job much better with my customers. I can add notes and photos to my work orders and can enter material requests if necessary," said Mechanical Shop HVAC technician David Floyd.
In fiscal year 2013, Facilities Management completed nearly 36,000 maintenance work orders.
"This new application will allow us to better manage our workload and provide more timely service to our customers," said Mitch Walley, Assistant Director of Maintenance.
