Planning and managing the physical space of the Auburn University campus is a complex effort involving multiple agencies and individuals. The Office of Space Planning & Management has prime responsibility for the inventory, utilization and evaluation of academic and administrative facilities on the Auburn University Main Campus and at off-campus facilities. The role of the Office of Space Planning & Management with regard to assignment of space is advisory.

The Office of Space Planning & Management performs the following space related services:

SPACE PLANNING SERVICES - The Space Management group within the Office of Space Planning & Management provides:

  • Assistance in the validation of requirements for capital projects using the Auburn University Space Planning Guidelines (SPG) and current space utilization studies.

  • Support role to the Office of Campus Planning of Auburn University in the development of program plans for capital projects.

  • Support to the University's strategic planning initiatives (programmatic, financial, and physical) from the perspective of space needs and use including performing "what if" scenarios.

  • Assistance to the schools/colleges in developing Academic Space Plans required for all capital projects.

  • Priority recommendations for space improvement and capital projects through analyzing the campus facilities needs, developing proposals and recommendations while adhering to the Comprehensive Campus Master Plan of the University.

INTERIOR DESIGN SERVICES - The Space Planning and Interior Design group within the Office of Space Planning & Management provides:

  • Interior Design Services to campus in the form of assistance with:
    • Space planning;
    • Budgeting for interior design needs;
    • Furnishings and finish selection and procurement;
    • Furnishings and finish installation.

  • Oversight of interior design consultants for Interior Design services on campus construction and renovation projects.

SPACE ASSIGNMENT - Space is a dynamic, essential, and expensive to maintain resource. Assignment of space is often a very complex issue. The Office of Space Planning & Management views space assignment issues on a long-term, university-wide basis when attempting to make acceptable space recommendations to the Provost. SPACE UTILIZATION - The Office of Space Planning & Management examines, analyzes and reports on the current use of space on an annual or as requested basis in order to assist the University in making better use of its resources. Current utilization will be a factor when evaluating a request for additional space.

SPACE INVENTORY - The Office of Space Planning & Management maintains a system-wide inventory of university space. This information is used by various university constitutions for internal and external reporting and analysis. Content of the space database (TigerSPACE) system provides building and floor plan drawings that depict square footage, departmental assignments, space use, and other information.

SPACE SURVEYS - Space Surveys are the mechanism by which the office uses to validate the spatial, classification and assignment of space for the university's facilities. Academic and administrative units should submit changes to spatial, classification and assignment data via the Space Classification Update Form. The process helps to ensure a comprehensive and accurate dataset within the space management database.
