Greetings from the Chair

By the time you read this newsletter in the Bulletin, the Call-for-Papers for ASB and ESA will have come and gone, the success of your diligent Christmas shopping will be known and the ASB meeting itself may be history. Our Chapter newsletter will continue to be officially published in the Bulletin, but if you read it there, you can count on old news. The lead time for the Bulletin is three months. This certainly makes it difficult to have up-to-date news. BUT, you can be current by using the Chapter's homepage (http://www.auburn.edu/seesa/) which is linked to the ESA homepage (http://esa.sdsc.edu/) and subscribe to the listserver. On our homepage, you can find the newsletter, various time-sensitive announcements and details of upcoming meetings. Let us make use of this instant communications that we now have available to us. Believe me, if I can use the web, anyone can.

The BIG NEWS about ASB in Wilmington, NC this year is the plenary speaker, Dr. E. O. Wilson. The plenary address will be held Wednesday evening, in contrast to the usual Thursday morning session. The local arrangements committee wants to open the plenary address to local universities, schools and public. Admission will be guaranteed to ASB attendees who preregister for the meeting, but not to those who register at the meeting site in Wilmington. So plan ahead. Look for our annual business meeting and luncheon at ASB. It will be held in its traditional Friday noon time slot. This year, we elect someone to fill the Vice-Chair office. Cliff Hupp is chairing the Odum Award committee this year. I am sure he would like to have volunteers to help him and his committee to judge the presentations. Call or email him and volunteer to help.

Not a lot of information is available about the Spokane ESA meeting. Arrangements for a Chapter get-together in Spokane are being made but are still in the planning stages. Look for details in the registration materials or on the ESA homepage.

Ken McLeod, Chair SEC/ESA

Notes on Southeast Chapter Meeting in Baltimore

Between 25 to 30 Southeast Chapter members met informally at the annual meeting of ESA in Baltimore. No formal business was discussed. Members just met, talked and had fun. Information on the budget and other general information were available.

Odum Award Committee

Cliff Huff is the Odum Award Committee Chair for 1998/1999. Other members of the committee are Ken Marion and Howard Neufeld. They will probably still be accepting volunteers to judge paper at Wilmington when you read this Newsletter. Contact a committee member if you can help.

The Chapter spent $737.09 ($500 for the winner and $237.09 for plaque, etc.) to support the Odum award in 1998. The interest we received from the Odum Award account for 1997/1998 was $384. We need to expand our effort to increase the Odum Award account funds so that it will be self supporting.

Comments from Secretary

I hope that all of you are using the Southeast Chapter Web Site (http://www.auburn.edu/seesa/) to keep abreast of Chapter News and events otherwise you are going to be 3-5 months behind. We will attempt to update the Web site regularly with any breaking news. If you have News or announcements that you think the Chapter needs to know, send them to Mark MacKenzie (mackenzi@forestry.auburn.edu) who updates the Web site.

As Ken, Mark, and I work to keep the Chapter activities running smoothly we need your ideas of what is the best for the future of the Chapter. Andy Ash and Kay Kirkman worked hard the last six months of their terms of office to get all the budget problems straighten out. I recently received a budget update from the ESA Headquarter that we think is correct.

One item we need to work on is increasing the Funds in the Odum Award Account. Currently our expenses are about double our income. To make the Award self supporting the Chapter needs to increase the size of the funds by $5000 to $6000. If you have any suggestion on ways to raise this money, let Ken or I have them.

At the Chapter's Annual meeting at Wilmington we will need to propose symposium(s) for the ASB meeting in 2000. Send your proposal to Mark MacKenzie (mackenzi@forestry.auburn.edu) so he can start the program planning. The Chapter usually sponsors a symposium on ecosystems near the meeting area (Chattanooga, TN). If you are willing to develop such a symposium let Mark know.

Send Ken and me information on any business items you would like discussed at the Annual Meeting in Wilmington. We need your ideas so that the Chapter can meet your needs.
