COMMENTS FROM THE CHAIR

The 1996 SEC/ESA Chapter Luncheon was held in Statesboro, Georgia at the Annual Meeting of the Association of Southeastern Biologists on April 12 hosted by Georgia Southern University. The minutes of the meeting are included in this issue of the Newsletter.

On a personal note, and for the Chapter, I wish to thank Dr. Kay Kirkman, outgoing Secretary-Treasurer, for all her work getting the Newsletters out and keeping the books for the Chapter. She was elected to be Chapter Chair for the next two years. Dr. Andy Ash was elected Secretary-Treasurer. I wish to also thank Dr. Niki Nicholas for her work as Vice-Chair.

The program for the August 10-14, 1996, combined annual meeting of the Ecological Society of America, the Society for Conservation Biology, the Association for the Tropical Biology, the American Society of Naturalists, and the International Society of Ecological Modeling - North American Chapter, has been posted to the ESA HOMEPAGE:

www.sdsc.edu/~ESA/ESA.html

This is a complete schedule of events, including business meetings, workshops, discussions, social events, symposia, and contributed paper and poster sessions. Hard copies of this program will be mailed to each ESA member in July (as an addendum to the ESA Bulletin), and will be available to other meeting registrants at the meeting.

The program is in html format, but was written as a Wordperfect 5.1 document. If you download it for printing (not recommended), and convert it back to wp5.1, most of the formatting should return.

Please note: at 623223 bytes, this is a large document!!

The meeting in Providence, Rhode Island August 10-14 looks to be a busy one. However, please take time out of your busy schedules to meet with the group for a Chapter luncheon on Monday August 12. Please refer to the meeting registration materials and schedule for details. I have enjoyed serving as the Chapter Chair for the past two years and look forward to handling over the files to Kay at Providence.

MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE SOUTHEASTERN CHAPTER OF THE ECOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA 12 MAY 1996 - STATESBORO, GEORGIA

The 20th Annual Meeting of the Southeastern Chapter of the Ecological Society of America was held on 12 May, 1996, during the Annual Meeting of the Association of Southeastern Biologists at Statesboro, Georgia. Ross Hinkle, Chair, called the meeting to order at 1:00 p.m. Forty-five members were in attendance.

Secretary's Report: Due to difficulties in obtaining records from the ESA Washington, DC office, membership information, balance of the Odum Award Fund, and income from the Biodiversity of the Southeast were not available at the time of the meeting. (Available budget information is provided elsewhere in this newsletter).

Activities Report: Niki Nicholas, Vice-Chair reported that the Chapter-sponsored fieldtrip scheduled to coincide with the ASB meeting to Cumberland Island was canceled. Dr. Paul Schmalzer reported that 12 persons attended the Fall 1995 Chapter field trip to the Sewanee River Management District.

Odum Award Committee Report: John Aho reported that 19 papers were submitted and he extended appreciation to the judges who assisted during this meeting.

Old Business: Niki Nicholas reported that the by-laws committee (Niki Nicholas, Paul Schmalzer and Frank Day) have proposed revisions to the by-laws (Chapter Newsletter 96-1). A vote on these revisions cannot be made until 60 days following newsletter publication. Thus the vote will be held on by-law revision at the 1997 Annual Meeting.

Ross Hinkle reported that Mark MacKenzie will provide computer space that can link the SEC/ESA homepage to the ESA homepage. Ideas for this homepage design and information to be included should be forwarded to Mark. Everyone is urged to examine the ESA homepage and set up "automatic message" so that you can be made aware of environmental news and current legislation.

New Business: Symposia ideas for Furman University (April 16-19, 1997) must be submitted to the ASB steering committee by August 1996 to be scheduled. Contact Ross Hinkle if you have any ideas.

Joe Winstead was appointed to a committee for field trips by Niki Nicholas. Most interest was expressed in a field trip associated with the ASB meeting. No field trips were proposed for next year, but suggestions should be forwarded to Niki or Joe.

The 1997 ESA Meeting will be in Providence, RI, August 10-14 (Sat-Wed). The SEC/ESA informal luncheon will be on Monday, August 12.

Frank McCormick inquired about the fiscal reporting problems at the ESA office. Robert Peet explained that there had been turnover in office staff and efforts were being made to rectify problems.

Election Results: The candidates for Chair were Howard Neufeld and Katherine Kirkman and candidates for Secretary/Treasurer were Mark MacKenzie and Andrew Ash. By majority vote, Katherine Kirkman and Andrew Ash were elected to Chair and Secretary/Treasurer.

Contributions to the Odum Award Solicited:

The SE/ESA established the Eugene P. Odum Award to encourage excellence in research by young ecologists. One of the purposes of the Award Fund is to finance the monetary part of the award. The fund is not large enough to generate sufficient interest to cover the annual $250 cash award. Please consider making a tax deductible contribution to our chapter's only award fund.
