Elections. Paul Schmalzer, Dynamac Corporation, was elected Chair. Yetta Jager, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, was elected Secretary-Treasurer. Terms of the new officers begin after the 2002 ESA meeting.

Editors. The ESA national office has requested that Chapters send recommendations for members of the editorial boards of its journals. Anyone interested in serving as a member of an editorial board should send a resume to Chair Niki Nicholas.

Bylaws. Revisions to the Bylaws, as proposed last year, were adopted. Bylaws are posted on the Chapter web site.

2002 Odum Award. Thirteen student papers were considered for the Odum Award. The award went to Jason D. Riddle, Appalachian State University, for a paper "Short-term effects of wildfire on breeding bird communities in Southern Appalachian old-growth/pre-settlement forests" co-authored with Matthew P. Rowe.

Odum Award Committee. Jake Weltzin, University of Tennessee, Knoxville was appointed as the new committee member.

Poster Award. The Chapter is considering establishing a student poster award to be presented at the Association of Southeastern Biologists (ASB) Meeting. The award may be named for a female ecologist. A committee was established with Jim Fralish (Southern Illinois University) as chair to develop recommendations for this award.

Symposia and Field Trips. The 2003 ASB Meeting will be held April 9-12, 2003 in the Washington, D.C. area with Howard University as the host. Symposia proposals are due to ASB by September 15, 2002. Symposia proposals must be sent to Chair Niki Nicholas by August 1 to be considered for sponsorship by the Chapter. The 2003 ESA Meeting will be held August 3-8, 2003 in Savannah, Georgia. Symposia proposals are due to ESA by September 15, 2002. Symposia proposals must be sent to Chair Niki Nicholas by August 1 to be considered for sponsorship by the Chapter.

Biographies of Naturalists. The Chapter is considering a project to document biographies of early naturalists of the Southeast. A committee was established, chaired by Howard Neufeld, Appalachian State University, to develop these ideas.

Message from the Chair. We had an excellent turnout at the recent Annual Business Meeting in Boone and have embarked on a number of new initiatives that will be scoped out this year. The chapter is fortunate that so many excellent people volunteer to work on chapter projects. ESA's Southeastern Chapter is probably the most active of the entire society and I want to express my admiration of all those who step up with great ideas and energy. I want to especially thank Debbie Moore of Troy State University who chaired this year's Odum Award Committee. Debbie served on the Committee for three years and now rotates off. Mike Held of St. Peter's College is will serve as Committee Chair for next year's award. Current active committess include the Odum Award Committee, the Poster Award Committee chaired by Jim Fralish (jfralish@gte.net), and the Naturalists' Biographies Committee chaired by Howard Neufeld (neufeldhs@appstate.edu). The chapter can sponsor proposals for symposiums and field trips for both the 2003 ASB and ESA meetings, but I (nsnicholas@tva.gov) will need the submissions by August 1. There is a great deal of work to be done to achieve our chapter goals. I want encourage all of you to consider working on a committee or offering some support in whatever way you can. See you in Tucson later this summer!

2002 ESA Meeting. The 2002 ESA Meeting will be held August 4-8 in Tucson, Arizona with the Society for Ecological Restoration. Check the meeting web site (http://www.esa.org/Tucson/index.html) for additional information=.= The Chapter will have an informal brown-bag lunch August 6 at this meeting.
