Message from the Chair:

This year marks the Silver Anniversary of our Southeastern Chapter and our annual meeting this coming April during the Association of Southeastern Biologists Meeting promises to be a very memorable event including a reception and slideshow on the 4th and luncheon with speakers on the 6th. The Anniversary Committee is planning some wonderful activities with special guests and speakers, and I hope that as many members who can make this upcoming ASB meeting in New Orleans. You can register online at http://www.loyno.edu/~asb/.

The meeting will be taking place at the historic Radisson Hotel at 1501 Canal Street. Call the hotel directly at (504) 522-4500 to get the special ASB rates as soon as possible. I want to make a special invitation to ESA graduate students to come to this meeting. If you never been to an ABS meeting before, I can assure you that they are a great way to meet colleagues in our field and New Orleans is a fun place to visit.

Spring 2001 Chapter Meeting in New Orleans:

The Southeastern Chapter will hold its annual meeting with the Association of Southeastern Biologists in New Orleans, 4-7 April 2001. Check the Southeastern Biology (The ASB Bulletin), the ASB Homepage (http://www.asb.appstate.edu/), or the meeting homepage (http://www.loyno.edu/~asb/) for details and deadlines. Our Silver Anniversary special events include a Wednesday evening social and a special Friday luncheon/Business Meeting featuring a talk by Eugene Odum and Frank McCormick. Charter members, past officers, and past recipients of the Odum Award will be recognized. Check the Chapter homepage for updates on the celebration plans.

Photos/Slides Needed ASAP!:

As part of the Southeastern Chapter 25th Anniversary Celebration, there will be a Special Anniversary slide show during a Southeastern Chapter reception on April 4. Ken McLeod is putting together a poster and the slide show as a chapter photo history and NEEDS YOUR HELP. Please send him copies of slides and/or photos of past and/or current ESA Southeastern Chapter members doing research or at Chapter meetings, socials and/or field trips. (Information on the who, what, where etc. will be very helpful). Ken will scan the visuals and get the originals back to you as soon as he can. Please send materials to Ken via email at McLeod@srel.edu or mail them to him at Savannah River Ecological Laboratory, P.O. Drawer E, Aiken, SC 29802 (803-725-5309).

Odum Award and Fund:

The Chapter sponsors the Eugene P. Odum Award for the best ecological paper presented by a student at the ASB meeting. Please donate to the Chapter's Odum Fund when you renew your membership.


Elections for Vice-Chair: 

As directed in Article 4 of Chapter Bylaws, The Southeastern Chapter of the Ecological Society of America shall elect a Vice-Chairperson this year at the annual meeting on April 6 in New Orleans. The position shall be elected by a majority vote of members attending the annual meeting. The terms of office shall be two years. The terms of office shall extend between national meetings of the Ecological Society of America. Officers newly elected at the Chapter meeting with the Association of Southeastern Biologists (ASB) shall serve in an elect role until the next national ESA meeting. Duties of the Vice-Chairperson include making arrangements for the scientific program, including field excursions, for all meetings of the Chapter. The Vice-Chairperson shall also assume the duties of the Chairperson whenever that person is unable to act. Scott Franklin will be leading the Nominations Committee for the 2001 elections. If you are interested in being nominated for this position, please contact Scott (sfrankli@memphis.edu) as soon as possible.


ESA 2001 Meeting:

The Chapter will have an informal lunch meeting at the ESA Annual Meeting in Madison, Wisconsin. Date and time will be announced later.


Future Meetings and Symposia:

The chapter will meet with ASB April 10-13, 2002 at Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina. If you want to develop a symposium for this meeting to be sponsored by the Chapter, send your proposal to Scott Franklin so that program planning can begin. The 2002 ESA Meeting will be held August 4-8 in Tucson, Arizona with the Mexican Ecological Society and the Society for Ecological Restoration. The Chapter can sponsor one symposium at that meeting. Symposia proposals will be due in the fall of 2001.
