Notes from Snowbird

The Southeastern Chapter held a brown bag lunch on August 2000 at the Ecological Society of America Meeting in Snowbird, Utah. No formal business was transacted but several subjects were discussed.

  1. The Chapter will meet with the Association of Southeastern Biologists April 4-7 in New Orleans, Louisiana. This will be the 25th anniversary of the Chapter. An ad hoc committee chaired by Dr. Bill Martin, Eastern Kentucky University, is planning special activities for this meeting. Details were not yet available.

  2. The Ecological Society of America will meet in Madison, Wisconsin, August 2001. The Chapter may sponsor a symposium. Suggestions for a Chapter-sponsored symposium should be sent to Dr. Scott Franklin, Vice-chair, as soon as possible.

  3. The Chapter will elect a Vice-chair at the New Orleans meeting to serve Aug. 2001-Aug. 2003. Anyone interested in serving on a nominating committee should contact Dr. Niki Nicholas, Chair.

  4. ESA is interested in encouraging and facilitating regional chapters. They have added a staff person to assist sections and chapters. They consider the Southeastern Chapter a model. ESA staff will be invited to the ASB New Orleans Meeting.

  5. There was some discussion of how to increase graduate student participation in the Chapter. Suggestions included waiving or reducing lunch fees at the annual meeting.
