Did you know?

  • Only one-third of high school students enrolled in Advanced Placement physics classes are girls.
  • Nationally, and in Alabama, women earn approximately 35% of bachelor's degrees awarded in the physical sciences and mathematics.
  • In 2004-2005, women earned only 19% of the bachelor's degrees awarded from Auburn University in the physical sciences and mathematics.

Former astronaut Sally Ride, a strong advocate for educating young girls about careers in science, suggested several strategies for keeping girls interested in math and science, including involving them in after-school or summer programs. She also recommended introducing girls to women scientists to allow them to put a face on these careers.

By joining SWSM, you can help us put a face on these important careers for the next generation and ultimately improve the pipeline of women in science and math!
