BACKGROUND
The Summer Bridge Program was founded in 1997, the goal of the Auburn University Summer Bridge Program is to implement each summer an intensive four-week academic enrichment experience for incoming minority freshmen planning to major in Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, and Mathematics or enroll in Pre-Professional programs in Dentistry, Engineering, Medicine, Optometry, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy and Veterinary Medicine. The program is designed to bridge the gap between high school and college by providing these students with tools needed in order to succeed and graduate in Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology curricula at Auburn University. Since 1997, 150 African-American students have participated. Bridge students consistently perform better than other minority students that opt not to attend the Bridge program. Among the highlights of the program, two students from the 1997 Bridge class entered Medical School in Fall, 2001. Several other bridge students are currently getting ready to go to Medical, Pharmacy, and Graduate Schools.
