Intensive planning for the creation and maintenance of the Auburn University Natural History Museum and Learning Center began in 1996. The groups and individuals involved had come to realize that the resources present in the form of the natural history collections could not be maintained or used in their present state. Nor could the vital educational and outreach potential of a natural history museum be tapped without physical aggregation of the collections, centralization of efforts, and creation of a modern facility. To address all of these needs, an organizational structure was developed. This structure will function to shepherd and assist the AUNHMLC through its initial development.
