Welcome to the College of Sciences and Mathematics Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry
I am honored to serve as Dean of this dynamic college and its exciting and talented team of students, faculty, researchers, advisors, and supporting staff that functions in the true Auburn spirit of academic excellence. The College is comprised of 5 departments: Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geology and Geography, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics. The College is one of the largest at Auburn with more than 2,000 undergraduate students and 125 M.S. and 150 Ph.D. students studying curricula offered by the College. There are 150 faculty and the College occupies 11 buildings. I encourage you to use this page to explore our College. The addresses herein (e-mail and otherwise) are for you to use to contact us so that we can tell you more about the College of Sciences and Mathematics.
As the Associate Dean for Research, I promote and facilitate the research efforts of faculty in the five COSAM departments. This office provides information to faculty on grant and contract opportunities, assists faculty in proposal development, and maintains grant and contract records for the college. This office also serves as an interface between the college and Office of Vice President for Research. In addition to research, faculty in the college are involved in instructional and outreach projects that are funded by outside agencies. Outside funding for research/instructional/outreach activities equal approximately $5 million annually, and comes mainly through grants from the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, United States Department of Agriculture, Air Force, Office of Naval Research, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and others. The web pages for the COSAM departments can be consulted for more information on major research programs and research interests of individual faculty.

As Outreach Director for COSAM, I coordinate programs, such as Science Olympiad, Science in Motion, and Y.E.S., designed to enhance K-12 student interest and knowledge in fields of science and mathematics. Additionally, many of our outreach programs, such as Alabama Operation Chemistry and Physics, Pasco Institute, and GAVRT, focus on K-12 teacher training and enrichment. It is our mission to not only increase student interest in science and math careers, but also to promote the level of science and technological literacy needed by all citizens for day-to-day living and decision making in the new millennium. The College of Sciences and Mathematics is highly committed to local, regional, statewide, and national science and math outreach efforts. As the Director of Assessment and Planning, I coordinate the development of the comprehensive short term and long term plans for the College and, for this purpose, serve as liaison between the departments and the College office and between the College office and the University administration. I also direct the assessment of these plans and use the assessments to recommend how the plans can be modified to meet changing university and college goals and objectives. The current College plans can be found at here. I also managed the College's preparation for the SACS reaffirmation visit to the university in 2003. In this role, I worked with the departmental coordinators, the Dean's office and the university coordinating committee. |
