Attention Parents of Elementary school kids! You’ve asked for it! A fully-loaded, science camp for your elementary school kids! This summer, we will host Summer YES camps for rising 1st-6thgraders on the Auburn University campus!
What is Summer YES Camp? The Summer Youth Experiences in Science Camp (Summer YES Camp), sponsored by the Auburn University College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM), is a summer camp experience for rising first- through ninth-grade students. At Summer Y.E.S., science is not taught by reading texts or taking notes, instead kids are given the opportunity to perform real experiments, design and build things, get their hands dirty, and experience the amazing world of science! During this action-packed camp, students can explore electronics, dabble in chemistry, “become a forensic scientist”, see amazing critters, and more!
Who should attend? Does your child like exploring the outdoors? Is he creative or always taking things apart? Does she love solving problems? Do your kids excel at math or science? If you found yourself answering yes to any of these questions or you have a rising first through ninth grade child who shows high interest or aptitude in science, math, or technology-related subjects you should definitely send your child to Summer YES Camp 2009 at Auburn University! They’ll have a blast, and you’ll feel great about positively contributing to your child’s summer break!
When is Summer YES Camp?
How does Summer YES Camp work? This year’s summer camps are all four-day science camp experiences for students who are upcoming 1st-9th graders. Students participate in 2 or 3 dynamic, hands-on courses such as Clue Seekers, LEGO Mania, and River Creatures each day for the entirety of camp. Topics vary by camp but may include courses in biology, chemistry, physics, ecology, genetics, microbiology, and forensics. A residential option is available to rising 7th-9th graders. Daily schedules for campers are provided below.
Elementary School Daily Schedule (rising 1st – 6th graders)
Middle School Daily Schedule (rising 7th- 9th graders)
Middle School Evening Schedule (rising 7th – 9th graders - residential campers)
My child is advanced for his/her grade level. May he/she attend a camp above their grade?
We recognize that many children who attend Summer YES Camps are bright for their grade level and therefore camps are designed with exceptional students in mind. Each course has been created around a set of educational and social expectations that go beyond what a child would learn in the average classroom and are sure to inspire your child. Furthermore, to ensure the integrity of our summer camps we respect other campers in our upper level programs by not placing younger children in their camp.
Who will be supervising my child? All instructors, YES Camp Counselors, and staff have undergone a rigorous application and screening process following Auburn University camp personnel policies. All personnel have experience working with K-12 children.
What makes this program different than other science programs? Summer YES courses are taught by university faculty and exceptional public and private school teachers with significant experience relating to kids! We offer kids the opportunity to explore science in a great environment (AU’s main campus). Furthermore, course sizes are kept small enough to receive personal attention from the instructors (typically 15 to 25 students per class). The staff to camper ratio is approximately 1:10 for classes, but large enough to have fun and meet other campers!
How will Summer YES help my child succeed in the future? Summer YES is designed to spur children’s imaginations, encourage exploration, and highlight the wonders of science. After participating in Summer YES we hope that your child’s eyes have been opened to the possibilities of a career in science. Middle school parents will be happy to know that this camp was the only middle school camp in the state of Alabama to be featured in the national publication The Ultimate Guide to Summer Opportunities for Teens in 2008!
Wow! This sounds awesome, but I am nervous about spending so much in today’s economy. Are there any scholarships available?
At this time there are no scholarships available through Auburn University. However, here are some other ways to save money.
Did you know that we offer a discounted price AND that there are two ways to get this price? For all parents who are “Johnny on the spot,” turning in your registration materials before May 1, 2009 will qualify you for the “Early-Bird” Discount! For those who are a little more laid back…we’ve got you covered too! You can qualify for the same discount by bringing a buddy with our “Bring-a-Buddy” Discount. In fact, both you and your buddy qualify for the discount when you return your registration materials together. Did you know that Summer YES Camp is a tax write-off? Yep, we said it, a tax-write off! Talk to your tax agent, bring in any paperwork and we will fill it out and deliver it back to you at the end of camp on the last day! Also, be sure to visit your local civic organizations. Often, these organizations will provide scholarships to students in need.
What is included in the camp fees*?
* Additional meals, housing, & nightly activities are included in the middle school residential camp fees.
Do you have residential options available?
We offer a residential option for rising 7th-9th grade campers. Residential campers arrive one night prior (Sunday, July 19, 2009) to start of camp to begin their stay in Auburn University residential halls. Note that college students do not live in dorms over the summer, so all dorm residents in the summer are associated with K-12 camps. While residential campers enjoy the same daily excitement of Summer YES Camp as commuter campers, they also are treated to a wide-variety of evening activities. In the past, activities have included movie night, bowling, Herp Hunts, swimming at AU’s state-of-the-art pool, bug collecting, Downtown Auburn Ice Cream Tour, and game night. And while your child is having a great time, they are also being fully supervised! YES Camp Counselors are responsible upper-level college science students, chosen based upon their past experience with middle school students, interest in science, and high academic achievement. You can be sure that your child will be supervised 24-hours a day.
