
Auburn University OIT policies require you to install anti-virus software. |
OIT provides McAfee Virus Scan 8.5 for Mac OS X free of charge to faculty, staff, and students.
1. Download Virus Scan: Click on the link in the left column to download the disk image from the AU Software site. If you are off campus you will be asked to authenticate using the following information:
Username: auburn\ + your Auburn User ID (e.g.: auburn\abc0001)
Password: same as for email
Account: leave blank
2. Open the Disk Image: After opening the dmg, you should open VirusScan.pkg and follow the instructions. After your computer is restarted, open VirusScan.app from the Applications folder.
3. Click eUpdate, then Start, to update your virus definitions.
4. Set up automatic scanning or perform manual scans regularly. Upon launch, the application will check for new virus definitions. To check manually, click eUpdate before you click Scan.

To set up automatic scanning when you’re away from your computer.
This example sets up automatic Virus scanning of the whole filesystem (/), including mounted volumes at 4:01 AM everyday.
1. Verify Energy Saver Settings: Open System Preferences and click Energy Saver. In the Sleep tab, drag the first slider (labeled "put the system to sleep...") to Never. Drag the second slider ("put the display to sleep...") to your desired sleep time. We suggest 30 minutes. In the Schedule tab, check "start up the computer," choose Every Day, and supply 3:55 AM for the time.
2. Open Virus Scan and click on "Scheduled Tasks..." in the "View" menu.
3. Click "New Scan Task" and fill in the fields with the following information:
Task Name: Daily Scan Date & Time: Current Date at 4:01 Local Time Scan Items: Select "Hard Drive" Recurrence: Daily Reccur every "1" days Leave "No end Date" checked.
4. Click Ok and your computer is ready to be scanned every night.
