About Us

Dr. Jack Feminella

Welcome to the Auburn University Department of Biological Sciences

Our department consists of 36 faculty doing research in areas covering a wide spectrum of biological studies, ranging from the molecular to the community level.

We have four identified areas of research concentration: 1) Microbial, Cell and Molecular Biology, 2) Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior, 3) Marine Biology; and 4) Conservation and Biodiversity. However, most of our faculty are interdisciplinary and their research spans two or more of these concentration areas. Additionally, faculty are also associated with many of Auburn University's Peaks of Excellence, including the Forest Sustainability, Cell and Molecular Biology, and Detection and Food Safety Peaks.

The department has approximately 450 undergraduate majors and 100 graduate students. The undergraduate majors offered through the department are Botany, Zoology, Marine Biology, and Microbiology.

The department has a strong commitment to undergraduate education and undergraduate students are encouraged to participate in research. Both faculty and graduate students in our department routinely win teaching and research excellence awards and several of the department's undergraduate majors have been recognized as Goldwater Fellows and USA Today Academic All-Americans.

Our department also has a variety of research and educational facilities, ranging from a natural history museum, housing numerous scientific collections, to state-of-the-art genetic analysis and microscopy common use laboratories.

Finally, we also have an extensive and dedicated support staff of course instructors, museum curators, laboratory coordinators and managers, technicians, and administrative assistants who contribute greatly to our research, education, and outreach mission.

Welcome again and please explore our site.
