Below are links to all of the tribes
and genera of Hypostominae, Neoplecostominae, and new subfamily, a page
for Loricariinae, and a page for Hypoptopomatinae. Four of the tribes
of Hypostominae are as of yet not described, so they will be referred to
by group names. This page contains a table where you can search by
taxononomy (GO TO TABLE) and a list of all taxa
alphabetically
(GO TO LIST). The table of links gives the
subfamily in column one, tribes in column two, the genus name recognized
by Armbruster (submitted) in column three, and genera placed in synonymy
in column five. The table is color-coded by subfamily. In addition,
an alphabetical list of genera in synonymy and the genus they are placed
in is given after the table (GO TO SYNONYM LIST).
There is also a comparisons section which separates Loricariidae from all
other catfishes (GO TO COMPARISONS)

COMPARISONS
Loricariidae can be separated from all other catfish except Lithogenes
(Astroblepidae)
by having an armor of dermal plates that support odontodes (integumentary
teeth) and the lips modified into a suckerlike disk. Loricariids
can be separated from Lithogenes by having plates supporting odontodes
directly behind the head (Lithogenes maximally has odontode-bearing
plates starting below the middle of the dorsal fin), by having 5 or fewer
anal-fin rays (vs. 6), and by having large papillae to the posterior edge
of the lower lip (vs. papillae only right behind dentaries with remaining
lower lip flat).
