  • Armbruster (1997) determines that Cordylancistrus platyrhynchus is actually a member of Chaetostoma sensu stricto.  Because of this, the only good characteristic separating Chaetostoma from Cordylancistrus, Dolichancistrus, and Leptoancistrus (the lack of plates on the tip of the snout) is no longer valid.  To solve the problems inherrent in the now faulty definition of Chaetostoma, and to make the best use of the Linnean hierarchy to express evolutionary relationships, it would be best if Cordylancistrus, Dolichancistrus, and Leptoancistrus are recognized as subgenera of Chaetostoma and C. platyrhynchus be placed in the nominate subgenus; however, such changes are not made at this time.  Lipopterichthys, is nothing more than a modified Chaetostoma and is considered a synonym of Chaetostoma. Hypocolpterus is also just a Chaetostoma.   Because of the close relationships of these four genera, they are treated as a group.  Click on the images above to see more detail about the genera.
