  • Armbruster (1997) determines that Scobinancistrus forms a polytomy with the species of Panaque.  In order to make Panaque monophyletic, Scobinancistrus would have to be placed in PanaquePanaque has been traditionally recognized on the basis of their large, spoon-shaped teeth, the species of Scobinancistrus also have spoon-shaped teeth; however, they have very long stalks associatd with them.  Given that Scobinancistrus will likely be treated as a synonym of Panaque in the future, the two genera are treated as a group.

    DISTRIBUTION

    Found in the Río Magdalena, Río Orinoco, Río Amazonas, Essequibo River, and Lago Maracaibo drainages


    COMMENTS

    Diagnostic material for this page is in preparation.

    In the aquarium trade, species of Panaque are often confused with species of Peckoltia.  The most common species sold under the name of clown plecostomus is Panaque maccus.
