  • Hemiancistrus landoni appears to represent an undescribed genus sister to all other Ancistrini.  This relationship is particularly interesting because the species is restricted to the Gulf of Guayaquil drainage in western Ecuador.  The Gulf of Guayaquil was the former outlet of the Amazon prior to the rise of the Andes; thus, H. landoni may be a relict of a once larger early radiation of Ancistrini.  See Armbruster (1997) for more detail.

    SPECIES

    H. landoni Eigenmann, 1916
    H. hammarlundi Rendahl, 1937 1

1 H. hammarlundi is in all likelihood a synonym of H. landoni.

    DIAGNOSIS

    H. landoni  is unique among loricariids in the extreme amount of curvature of its maxilla, the angle is less than 90°.

    DESCRIPTION

A description and diagnosis for this page is being prepared.

    COMPARISONS

Differs from all other Hemiancistrus and most other Ancistrini by being located west of the Andes.  It is probably only sympatric with Chaetostoma and Ancistrus  which both lack plates along the snout margin.  Also sympatric with Hypostomus spinosissimus which has evertible cheek plates, a white base color with small black spots (vs. tan to brown base color with large black spots ), a long, whip-like tail in adults, and which obtains elongate odontodes on breeding males

    DISTRIBUTION

Only in rivers that drain into the Gulf of Guayaquil and just south of the gulf on the Pacidfic slope of Ecuador.
