Picus Sonic Tomograph Demonstration
Master Arborist, Chris Hastings, came to the Arboretum on Wednesday, February 10, 2010, to give a demonstration on the Picus Sonic Tomograph. This device is used to obtain a sonic scan of a tree which shows rot, fungal decay, or cavities that might be within a tree. Chris's arboriculture firm, ArborMedics, is the first company in the Southeast to use such a device as a regular diagnostic service. He demonstrated the use of this equipment on our beloved Founder's Oak, which has been a part of the Arboretum for the past 150 years.
