BYLAWS

Purpose

The Advisory Council for the College of Sciences and Mathematics offers appropriate support for the College as it strives to achieve excellence in teaching, research, and outreach in the sciences and mathematics.

 

Mission

A.  Provide guidance to the Dean, Department Heads and Chairs of the College on strategies for achieving excellence in academic, research, and outreach programs.

B.  Promote the College's efforts to secure financial support and other resources from the university, state and federal sources, and the private sector.

C.  Assist with improvements to the intellectual and physical environment of students and faculty.

D.  To identify opportunities for recognizing and advancing scholarly and research excellence.

 

Objectives

More specifically, the Council will:

1 .  Assist in the establishment of objectives, identification of opportunities, and the development of strategies for improving instructional, research and outreach functions within the College.

2.  Provide career counseling and placement services for the College's undergraduate and graduate majors in seeking and finding career opportunities.

3.  Promote extramural opportunities for College faculty (example: speaking opportunities, internships, etc.).

4.  Provide special insights and expertise for campus lectures, classroom presentations, student mentoring, faculty consultation, etc.

5.  Serve as a resource in faculty recruitment (example: Council members may meet with prospective faculty members, enabling them to better understand Auburn and the opportunities available for alumni support).

6.  Provide advice and counsel for the Dean, Heads/Chairs, Program Directors, and faculty on matters related to the College's programs, faculty, students, and facilities.

7.  Assist in efforts to acquire resources necessary for continued development, by advocating increased public support and through private fund raising.

Membership

The Council consists of 40-45 persons, including alumni and other friends of the College. Names of nominees for council participation are submitted to the Dean for final consideration. In making appointment, the Dean consults with Department Heads/Chairs and Program and Auxiliary Office Directors and Administrative Council members as necessary for approval of nominees. The Dean is a full voting member of the Council.

Members are normally appointed for three-year renewable terms, with membership terms effective October 1 of each year.

Upon completion of a term, a member who does not continue with the Council shall be designated a "Dean's Associate." Dean's Associates are regarded as ex-officio members of the Council and are both invited and urged to attend meetings regularly.

Council members and Dean's Associates will be listed in Journey, the College's annual newsletter.

Officers and Committees

A chairperson will be elected by the membership of the Council upon recommendation of the Executive Committee. The chairperson will serve no more than two consecutive two-year terms. The chairperson will chair meetings of the Council and Executive Committee and work with the Dean in formulating the meeting agenda. Standing committees and their Chairs will be appointed by the Council Chair in consultation with the Dean. The Dean will then appoint appropriate Department Heads/Chairs Program Directors, the College's Development Director, faculty members, and students as ex-officio members.

A council secretary will be appointed by the Dean from among the College faculty or staff.

Standing committees will be as follows, however, other committees may be established or dissolved as appropriate.
