Dear Chiro,
The UAB PHS 101 course comes under the same form of course as was
discussed in the objections of Tim for the course AUB PHS 101. Thus these
two courses should be considered together so that any decision for one
applies to the other.
I was under the impression that in our early discussions that we
considered such courses in the core curriculum for degree programs in which
students needed a single "science w/lab" course. Perhaps the objection is
the 3 versus 4 hour format. However the AAGS guidelines are flexible enough
to assimilate both the 3 or 4 hour version of such a course as long as the
overall core curriculum requirements could be met. It is true that I
personally think that the 4 hour version would be better, but I still feel
that is not a valid enough reason for objection to these courses. Therefore
I cast my vote of approval for inclusion in the General Studies Core.
Also Chiro, if you plan to call mtg of the Physical Science Committee, I
vote for Birmingham. Montgomery is just too far for me to come and return
in one day. Mobile would be ok providing it could be coupled with a time
either when the Bellingrath gardens are in full bloom in the spring, or the
early fall when K-12 kids are back in school so that the beach rates are
low enough so that underpaid teachers can afford to have a short vacation.
One other thing, I am not at UAH this summer. I'm on a NASA Faculty
Fellowship. So if you have any business, please send it by email, which
I'll monitor on a regular basis. Regular mail will just languish in my box
at the physics department, and I may not see it in time to meet deadlines
necessary for AAGS purposes.
