Moving and Miscellaneous Information

Auburn University is located in East Central Alabama. Ft. Benning, GA is 45 minutes to the east and Maxwell Air Force Base is 50 minutes to the southwest. Auburn is approximately an hour and a half from Atlanta and two and a half hours from the Gulf Coast. Auburn is a medium-sized southern town with little crime and cordial people.

Moving to a new area can be intimidating. The following information was selected to ease the burden of moving.

Location:

Auburn is located in East Central Alabama, on I-85 between Atlanta and Montgomery.  The city has a small-town atmosphere with a non-student population of about 20,000.  The city is scattered with many nice neighborhoods and enjoys a low crime rate.  Auburn is often referred to as "The loveliest village on the plains."

  • 50 miles from Montgomery, AL (Maxwell AFB)

Medical:

While Auburn is considered a remote location by TRICARE, you will have the option of having your Primary Care Manager from the following:

Active duty Marines enrolled in TRICARE Prime Remote have the option to obtain civilian medical care in the local Auburn area.

Tuition Costs:

Active Duty Members and spouses pay In-state tuition.  Below is what a current MECEP student is paying for tuition, fees and books.  These figures will vary slightly based on the course load and curriculum taken.

  • Cost per semester based on 15 semester hours.
  • Tuition and Fees:          $2,400.00
  • Books:                            $450.00
  • Total per semester        $2,850.00

Potential sources of income:

  • Montgomery GI Bill      -Approx. $3,900/sem.
  • Admiral Boorda Scholarship - $1000/semester
  • Pell Grant – variable
  • Admiral Travers Scholarship - $2000/year
  • 40+ local scholarships - $500-2000

The G.I. Bill will cover the cost of tuition and fees.  A number of other grants, scholarships, and assistance is available from the University and the NROTC Unit.  Most scholarships awarded by the NROTC Unit are based on performance and are competitive.  It is not unusual for spouses to pursue a degree at the same time as the service member.

The state of Alabama grants IN-STATE tuition to active duty personnel and their spouses.  MECEP students signed up for the G.I. Bill benefit from this when enrolled full time because, at Auburn University, the G.I. Bill covers the total cost of tuition.  (Do not intend on using the G.I. Bill to cover the first semester's tuition as the money tends to arrive a couple months behind tuition bills.)

Grants.  Federal Pell Grants are provided to undergraduate students who demonstrate exceptional need.  Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants are available, in limited number, to undergraduates with financial need.

Loans.  Federal Perkins Loans, William D. Ford Direct Loans, and Institutional Loans  provide long-term, low interest loans to students.  Some loans require demonstrated financial need.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Entering Freshmen Scholarships -  The minimum eligibility requirements for Entering Freshmen Academic Scholarships are test scores of 27 ACT or 1220 SAT and a 3.0 high school GPA.  All required credentials must have been submitted to the Admissions Office by December 1 of the student's senior year of high school.  Upon acceptance to Auburn University, students meeting the above criteria will automatically be considered for an Entering Freshman Scholarship.  No additional applications are necessary.

General and Departmental Scholarships - Auburn University offers an array of General and Departmental Scholarships.  A listing of these scholarships can be found in the University Bulletin.  The minimum eligibility requirements for them are as follows:

-Freshmen:  27 ACT or 1220 SAT and 3.0 high school GPA.

-Transfer:  3.2 GPA with acceptance of admission

   -Currently Enrolled:  cumulative 3.0 GPA

Many of AU's General and Departmental Scholarships require a demonstration of financial need.  Therefore, to ensure consideration for this scholarship pool, students must file a free Application for Federal Student Aid.

NROTC Scholarships - If a student enrolled in NROTC failed to receive a 4-year national NROTC scholarship prior to enrolling, he/she can apply for a 3-year or 2-year scholarship after receiving his first set of grades at Auburn.  These scholarships are awarded based on college GPA, physical fitness and military aptitude.

Other Scholarships - Throughout the academic year, several one-time scholarships are awarded to students that excel in academics and military aptitude.
