United States Marine Corps Commissioning


Well, if you're looking here, chances are you want to be commissioned when you graduate.  This page is designed to outline the procedures that MECEPS and Marine Options must accomplish in order to receive an appointment as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps.

REMEMBER, YOUR APPLICATION FOR APPOINTMENT IS DUE SIX MONTHS PRIOR TO YOUR EXPECTED COMMISSIONING DATE !!

    Commissioning Timeline:

  1. Upon Arrival to the NROTC Unit: Schedule a commissioning physical, to be completed ASAP
  2. Annually: Complete Annual Certification of Physical Condition Form
  3. Summer following Junior Year (freshman year for MECEPs): Successfully complete OCS
  4. Six Months Prior to Commissioning: Application for appointment as a 2nd LT is due! This allows HQMC time to review your packet, and request revisions/clarifications.

         a.   DATES:   All dates are recorded in 2-digit year, month, and day sequence separated by spaces:   e.g., 23 January 1950 is written "50 01 23."   Dates must not be entered on this form in any other format.

         b.   ITEM 1 - NAME.   Enter full last name, full first name, full middle name (or names if the individual has more than one middle name).

               (1)   If the individual was given an initial or initials rather than first and/or middle name, enter the initial or initials in quotations, i.e., "T,".   If the individual was not given a middle name or an initial, enter "NMN."

         c.   ITEM 2 - SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER (SSN).   Enter the SSN broken down in three increments of three, two, and four digits, i.e., "123 45 6789."

         d.   ITEM 3:   DATE OF BIRTH.   Enter the year, month, and day.

         e.   ITEM 4:   HOME OF RECORD (HOR).

               (1)   The HOR is the place recorded as the claimed residence upon appointment.   Do not confuse HOR with state of legal residence for tax purposes.   While some of the tests to establish each may be similar, these two items are separate.   Upon appointment, the elected HOR will be established and it may not be changed unless there is a status change that would give the individual an opportunity to make a new election.

               (2)   Record the full address ensuring that the street, house number, RFD, or RR, city, county and state are included.

         f.   ITEM 5 - GRADE APPOINTED.   Enter "2nd Lt."

         g.   ITEM 5A - CODE.   Enter "01."

         h.   ITEM 5B - DATE OF RANK.   Leave blank.

         i.   ITEM 6 - PLACE OF BIRTH.   Enter the city and state if born in the United States.   Enter the city and county for areas outside the United States.

         j.   ITEM 7 - MOS.   Enter the appropriate Military Occupational Speciality (MOS) for the occupational field (OF) for which the individual has been approved as indicated below:

ITEM 21 - PRIOR SERVICE.   In order to establish creditable service for pay purposes, list all periods of military service prior to entering into the NROTC Program.   This includes all reserve service both prior to and after serving on active duty.   All periods of prior service listed must be supported by appropriate documentation enclosed with the individual's Application for Appointment.   Individuals in the MECEP Program may leave this information blank.

               (1)   If the individual has no creditable service, enter "None" in Item 21.1A.

               (2)   If the individual has prior service, list it starting with the oldest period first, indicating the branch of service and the component (Reserve or Regular), highest grade obtained, the date of enlistment and date of discharge.

SECURITY INVESTIGATION.   On the top of the form in the space provided, enter the date the individual's security investigation was completed.   If the investigation was not a NAC or it was not completed by DIS, make the necessary changes.
