What is Army ROTC?

Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) is an elective curriculum you take along with your required college classes. It offers opportunities and challenges that can put you on the fast track to success. You’ll develop confidence, self-esteem and leadership skills that will help you progress in your college studies. You will also earn opportunities to serve your country as an officer, full time on active duty or part time in the Reserves or National Guard.

Who Participates in ROTC?

At Auburn University nearly 170 students of the "War Eagle Battalion" take Army ROTC courses each year. They include students from business, sciences, engineering, nursing and nearly all other academic fields. Each year, about 25 Auburn students complete the Army ROTC program and earn presidential appointments as Army officers.

How do Army ROTC Courses fit in?

Army ROTC involves one classroom course and leadership lab each semester (as academic curriculum electives).

4-Year Program
The traditional four-year program is divided into two parts, the Basic Course (Freshmen and Sophomores) and the Advanced Course(Juniors and Seniors).

The Basic Course covers courses such as basic military skills, leadership, customs and traditions and map reading. These two courses are one credit hour each. There is no commitment for taking the Basic Course, if you are not on scholarship. Upon completion of the Basic Course you will be eligible to contract into the Advanced Course.

The classes in the Advanced Course are three credit hours each semester and cover topics such as military justice, advanced leadership theory and officer development and preparation. The weekly labs involve military skills training and emphasize hands-on participation.

2-Year Program
If you miss the first two years of ROTC, are a junior college graduate or are entering a two-year post graduate course, you may still qualify for a commission through the two-year ROTC program. The ROTC Leadership Training Course (LTC) is a four week program that you attend during the summer prior to entering the program. You will be paid for camp attendance and upon completion you will be eligible for the Advanced Course.

Leadership Training Course 2011What Else Does the Program Offer? Army ROTC Cadets put their leadership training to action during Field Training Exercises (FTX) throughout the year. Near the end of the program, cadets attend a summer leadership course where their where their skills are put to the test. Cadets also have additional opportunities for summer training at Army posts. Training opportunities include Airborne, Air Assault, Northern Warfare and extra curricular activities.
