Johnny E. Horne
Army ROTC Military Science Instructor


Sergeant Major (RET) Johnny Edward Horne was raised in Ozark, Alabama and graduated from Carroll High School in June 1990.  He served honorably in the military for 23 years and 3 months.  He entered the United States Army on 3 June 1990 and went to Basic Training on 4 June 1990 at Fort Dix, NJ.  After Basic Training he went to Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, VA as a Warehouse Specialist (76V), now an Automated Logistics Specialist (92A). He retired from the military on 1 August 2013 and joined Auburn University ROTC Program in June 2013.

Mr. Horne has held every type of leadership position from Squad Leader, Instructor, Senior Drill Sergeant, Senior Observer/Controller, 1SG, Afghanistan MiTT NCOIC, to Senior Instructor Writer at the Sergeants Major Academy.  His first permanent assignment was in the 595th Maintenance Company located at K-16 Seoul, Korea working as a warehouse clerk. His other assignments included 31st Maintenance Company, FT Irwin, California as a section Sergeant; Hotel Company 25th Aviation Brigade, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii as a squad leader; 224th Logistic Training Department, Fort Lee, Virginia as a AIT Instructor; 1-46th Infantry Battalion, Fort Knox, Kentucky as a Senior Drill Sergeant; 3-346th Infantry Regiment Camp Shelby, Mississippi as Senior Observer / Controller Trainer; FT. Irwin as a Family Wellness Center NCOIC and Maintenance Troop as a 1SG; 25th ID G-4 Supply and Services SGM. His operational deployments include Operation Uphold Democracy Haiti as a Team Sergeant, Operation Enduring Freedom Afghanistan as a National Police MiTT NCOIC, and Operation New Dawn as USD-C G4 Supply SGM; Headquarters Support Company as the Operations and Training SGM.  He’s currently assigned as an Army Military Science Instructor for Auburn University ROTC Program.

Mr. Horne's military education includes Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course, Advanced Noncommissioned Officers Course, Drill Sergeants Course, Airborne School, Air Assault School, Observer Controller / Trainer Course, First Sergeants Course, and the Sergeants Major Academy.  Mr. Horne has a bachelor’s degree in General Studies from William Carey College and a Masters Degree in Leadership and Management Studies from the University of Texas in El Paso. 

Mr. Horne's awards and decorations includes the Bronze Star (1OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal (4OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (4OLC), the Army Achievement (1SOLC and 1OLC), the Army Good Conduct Medal (7th Award), and the National Defense Medal w/Bronze Star device.
Mr. Horne is married to Isabel (22 years) and they have 3 kids, 2 boys and 1 girl: Drea (20), Danielle (18), and Donavan (14).
