Academic Coaches are available by appointment to assist students with academic skill deficits as well as other kinds of difficulties that might be interfering with their academic success. Each student is thoroughly assessed regarding his/her academic skills and emotional/psychological well-being by doctoral level counseling students who serve as academic coaches, and are supervised by a Licensed Professional Counselor. Based on the assessment, the student and his/her coach create an individualized improvement plan, which may include referrals to other resources on campus or in the community. All of our services are free and available to every Auburn University student.
Academic coaching focuses on academic skills such as:
Note-taking (in a lecture setting or from a textbook)
Test-taking strategies and preparing for tests
Test anxiety
Reading for comprehension
Self-testing, reviewing, and preparing for class
Selecting main ideas and recognizing important information
Use of support techniques, materials, and resources
Time management as it relates to academic tasks
Setting a study schedule
Academic counseling focuses on other areas, resolvable through problem-solving, which negatively impact academic success such as:
Motivation
Self-discipline
Perseverance
Attitude and interest
Goal setting
Transition and adjustment to college
Time management
Personal responsibility
Self-management
Conflict management
Assertiveness
Effective decision-making
Stress management
Students who are experiencing more long-term issues and difficulties, including but not limited to: major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, learning disabilities, abusive relationships, suicidal ideation, and other difficulties that cannot be resolved through the problem-solving model will be referred to other resources for assistance. There may or may not be a cost associated with those services.
