Quick Interview with PC Blake Jackson

This week we had the chance to talk with Blake Jackson, a 2011 Parent Counselor from Birmingham, AL. Blake is a Junior in Finance.

What is something your parents did for you that helped with your transition into college?

- The best thing that my parents did to help me transition to college was give me space.  I am the third and final child in my family to attend college.  My parents had learned from my older siblings that college is the time where they really had to let go, and let me grow into college on my own in a lot of areas.  My parents were still very supportive and always there for me in the tough times.

Why did you choose to become a Parent Counselor?

-I chose to become a Parent Counselor, because I thought it was a very unique way to meet awesome new people and serve Auburn.  My older sister was a Parent Counselor, and I she was the one who really recommended it to me.  It was her favorite summer at Auburn, and she still talks about it.  Being a Parent Counselor also is a great way to spend your time well in the summer.

What program or resource has helped you out the most academically?

-The program that has helped me out the most academically is Study Partners.  It is a great way to get tutored by older peers, who went through the same classes right before you did.  Every tutor I have used at Study Partners has been extremely helpful and patient with me.  I would definitely recommend this as a tool in your time here at Auburn.

2011 Camp Counselor Lola Fisher

Meet Lola Fisher, a 2011 Camp Counselor from Houston, Texas. Lola is a Junior majoring in Laboratory Technology.

When you were a freshman, what was your greatest mistake, and how did you handle it?

Not asking for help early enough. I was really struggling in my chemistry class, and I just could not grasp the concepts. Later on in the semester I finally got a tutor and I really saw an improvement. I ended up with a decent grade in the class, but if I had gotten help earlier my grade could have been higher.

What was the one thing you didn’t leave home without when you started your freshman year?

My extensive collection of ballet flats. I probably should have been more worried about rain boots, but I was oblivious to how Auburn weather really is. Sunny with a chance of rain at anytime.

Why do you feel it is important for incoming freshmen to attend Camp War Eagle?

Camp War Eagle lets you experience what its really like to be an Auburn Tiger before coming on campus. You get a  preview of things you might want to participate in, social and academic issues you might face, and a head start on making friends. Its more than orientation; it offers a little something for everyone.

What’s one thing you did that made you not miss home so much?

Being from Texas, I really couldn’t go home whenever I felt like it. I joined organizations so I wouldn’t feel so homesick. Once I started to get more involved on campus, I made more friends. And I didn’t have as much time to sit around thinking about how much I missed home.
