There were a number of links and requests that came out of the 2009 Faculty Training Workshop. They are posted here below; all of these materials are somewhat dated, as they all were produced in 2009 or before. To contrast these materials with more current information, please see the webpages with our 2012 workshop materials, as well as other related sites on the web. The below materials provide good background information about a wide range of issues that can support our teaching and research activities in sustainability. Enjoy perusing them!

Pre-Workshop Activities, Readings, and Videos for Participants


To get everyone on the same page and also get you thinking a little bit before the workshop, we've put together a short do/read/watch list that we'd like you to go through before we get started on the 11th. Some of these will help provide a general background and others we will be specifically discussing during the workshop.

Footprinting Activity

This isn't an assignment that you need to hand in (although you might want to copy some info down), but it will provide you with some personal info for the discussions on the first day of the workshop. This should only take a few minutes to complete and only a little longer to think about.

While many of us have been working for years on some of the issues covered by sustainability (whether you knew it or not), it is interesting to occasionally consider our own impacts (both as individuals and as a nation).

One of the tools that has been developed over many years is the ecological footprint quiz. For those that have taken this before, the link below is to the 2.0 version which has been significantly refined from the first calculator (make sure you allow popups from footprintnetwork.org).

It will take just a couple of minutes to go through the calculator below.

  • Click on "Take the Quiz"

  • Enter "Detailed Information" as often as you can (try to get your mileage as close as you can and your actual electricity/gas bill info)

  • When done, make a note of your results in: # planets, your total acres (also note which categories are largest), the % from the pie chart categories (mouse-over to get the number)

Spend a little time thinking about what the output means, and also any responses/impressions about the questions that they use to generate this information. We will be discussing this on the first day of the workshop.

Background Videos and Readings

We know there is a lot going on in the next week with the end of the semester nearing, but we think that you'll enjoy these. For the purpose of the workshop, they will simultaneously help get everyone on the same page and provide some inspiration and focus in advance of the workshop.

We've chosen these short videos and readings because we think they give a good background into reasons for concern, where sustainability is going, and how academic institutions fit in. They also illustrate the wide range of disciplines and their relation to sustainability that will help with our interdisciplinary discussions.

On both days of the workshop we'll be discussing ideas that are mentioned in these articles and videos and some of the specifics of each as well (they are not listed in any particular order).
