ResourcesResources for Auburn University Students: The Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs aims to accomplish the mission set forth in Auburn University’s Strategic Diversity Plan (SDP): Establish diversity as a core value at Auburn University. It strives to offer a comprehensive range of exemplary educational programs that foster and sustain an environment that promotes academic excellence, respects differences, and accepts inclusiveness.
Association for Women in Science, Auburn Chapter (AWIS) is a national organization that supports equal opportunities for and equal participation of women in scientific fields. AWIS, Auburn Chapter, is a new and growing organization, that aims at promoting women in science. The local chapter supports the causes of the national organization but also has specific activities to appeal to a college community.
Sisters of the Academy (SOTA) Institute’s purpose is to facilitate the success of Black women in the Academy. The organization aims to create an educational network of Black women in higher education, facilitate collaborative scholarship among Black women in higher education and professional development. Some of the SOTA’s signature events include the Research Boot Camp, Writing Retreat, and the Intensive Grantsmanship Seminar.
Society of Women Engineers, Auburn Section (SWE) is an organization for women in all fields of engineering. SWE empowers women to succeed and advance in their engineering aspirations and motivates them to become successful students and leaders. It offers members opportunities to apply for scholarships, attend conferences, improve resumes, gain exposure to company representatives looking to offer students jobs and internships, and to serve others. Through out the year SWE hosts many events such as regular meetings, workshops, philanthropy events, t-shirt designing, socials and much more. Society of Women in Sciences and Mathematics (SWSM) includes members who are leaders and role models committed to increasing awareness of opportunities available for women in the fields of sciences and mathematics, as well as providing support to ensure success. They are alumni and friends of AU's College of Sciences and Mathematics. Members of SWSM give of their time, talents, energy and resources to enhance the educational experiences of AU students. The Women's Leadership Institute Program is a five-day residential program at Auburn University aimed to prepare a new generation of women leaders with vision and courage, who will go on to participate effectively in the decision-making spheres in business, politics, and the professions. The program provides participants an opportunity to sharpen their leadership skills. The Auburn University Women's Studies Program plays a central role in the teaching and the promotion of research and scholarship about women and gender across the disciplines on campus. The program maintains and develops a curriculum, coordinates a speakers series in cooperation with faculty and administrators from all colleges and schools at Auburn, communicates with the Auburn community through publication of an annual newsletter, identifies new faculty for membership, and builds alliances with other regional and national programs. Resources in the community: Domestic Violence Intervention Center The center’s mission is to provide direct services in order to eliminate violence in the lives of women and children. It serves five counties (Chambers, Lee, Macon, Randolph and Tallapoosa) in East Alabama region. DIVC provides a 24-hour crisis line, confidential emergency shelter, counseling, legal advocacy, referrals to agencies and organizations that assist victims, support group, and a school based violence prevention program. |
