About Us
Women, who constitute about half of the total workforce in the United States and half of the degree recipients in a number of scientific fields,
still make up only one-fifth of the nation's scientific and technical workers. Science and engineering education and research are increasingly global endeavors. Identifying the best, brightest, and most innovative science and engineering talent will be crucial if the nation's industries and the nation itself are to maintain their competitive edge.*
The WISE Institute was created in part by an NSF ADVANCE grant as a unit of Women's Initiatives in the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. The Assistant Provost of Women's Initiatives oversees the unit that has a full time coordinator.
WISE is governed by a steering committee with representatives from the College of Sciences and Mathematics, the College of Agriculture, the College of Veterinary Medicine, Women's Studies, the College of Human Sciences, the College of
Liberal Arts, and the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering.
