ADVANCE Auburn

ADVANCE Auburn: SEM Transformation through 'Small Wins'" is an effort to establish "small wins" as an approach that will profoundly and lastingly change the culture and climate of the science, engineering, and mathematics (SEM) disciplines at Auburn University.

Purpose:
To develop the "small wins" approach of incremental change for transformation of SEM departments and colleges.

Goal:
To increase the participation, advancement, and success rate of SEM women faculty.

Auburn University Women's Mentoring Program

The Auburn University Women's Mentoring Program was designed specifically for women faculty at Auburn University.

Purpose:
To increase the representation of women at all levels of the Auburn University faculty.

Goals:

  • To help female faculty members become more effective teachers
  • To develop collegial departmental relationships
  • To develop research collaborations
  • To assist in female faculty members achieve their goals of tenure, promotion while balancing work and family demands.
  • To aid in allowing female faculty members feel connected to a larger network in he Auburn University community.

Women in the Sciences & Engineering (WISE) Institute

•  WISE By-Laws

The primary mission of the WISE Institute is to enhance the entry and uccess of women in the Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology fields at all levels to achieve gender balance at Auburn University.

Purpose:
To encourage, support, and retain women and girls in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering.

Goals:

  • Collaborate with Outreach to provide hands-on experiences for K-12 female students to get them excited about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
  • Develop programs for K-12 young women to increase their interest and skills in STEM fields, and increase opportunities for young minority women to participate in these programs.
  • Increase the number and quality of women undergraduate and graduate students in STEM.
  • Provide female mentors and role models who are active in research in STEM for K-20 female students.
  • Work closely with the Women's Resource Center on providing a supportive environment for all women on campus.
  • Under the leadership of the Assistant Provost for Women's Initiatives, research and identify factors that are a barrier to women's success in STEM.

Women's Resource Center

The Auburn University Women's Resource Center will serve as a centralized hub of information and resources for Auburn's campus on women's initiatives, programs, and issues.

Purpose:
To create programs, mentoring programs and collaborations on Auburn University's campus to enhance the livelihood of women and those in direct contact with them.

Goals:

  • To actively work toward fostering a campus environment that nourishes a culturally diverse community, by acknowledging and respecting differences and encouraging acceptance and inclusiveness.
  • To provide opportunities to support individual and organizational growth and development of students, faculty, and staff, including leadership opportunities.
  • To promote a campus environment in which all persons can feel safe.
  • To collaborate with other campus units to provide programs and ervices that will enhance the lives of women at Auburn University, empower them, and explore gender-related issues.
  • To advocate for inclusive policies and procedures throughout the university.

Work Life Assessments

Purpose:
To assess and make recommendations about policies and campus climate that could affect recruitment and retention of women faculty and staff and in turn affect the well-being of all faculty members.

Goals

  • To conduct needs assessments and recommendations. Some topics to be considered:
    • Child care
    • Family Leave Policy
    • Search Committee Training
    • Hiring processes
    • Tenure policies
    • Departmental and campus climate
