Redefining Woman: Celebrating Diversity, Finding Voice
Women’s Leadership Conference
March 30-31, 2009

Our Mission

The mission of the Auburn’s Women Leadership Conference is to facilitate the development of leadership skills, to provide information about important issues affecting women’s lives, and to promote women’s active involvement in their communities, countries, and in the world.

What is the Women’s Leadership Conference?

The Women's Leadership Conference is a one-day conference sponsored by the Auburn University Women’s Resource Center and the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. The conference offers workshops, speakers, and discussion panels aimed at enhancing student’s leadership abilities and providing a place to network with other women leaders. The conference goal is to provide women with a day of empowerment and provide the tools and connections to further develop their leadership skills.

This Year's Women's Leadership Conference!

Auburn University’s annual Women’s Leadership Conference (WLC) is the signature event of the AU Women’s Resource Center.  The 2009 WLC is themed “Redefining Woman: Celebrating Diversity, Finding Voice” and will feature an Awards Banquet on March 30th, honoring distinguished AU alumnae, faculty members, and students.   Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey, AU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, will give the keynote address.  Dr. Kathryn Thornton, currently the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs in the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science, and a former astronaut, is the first recipient of the alumna award.  The following day, March 31st, includes speakers, panels and workshops on a variety of topics.  Participants will gain knowledge and skills that will advance their leadership abilities, and will have opportunities to network with others.

Workshops at the conference include: “How to Ask for Money: Cutting through the Red Tape,” “How to Grow a Money Tree: Tips for Financial Management,” “How to Climb Capitol Hill: Legislation in Women’s Issues,” How to Work It: Finding Creative Ways of Self-promotion,” “How to Act Out: Students Finding Voice for the Sustainable Movement” and “How to Walk a Tight Rope: Finding balance for work and life.”

The deadline for registration is Wednesday, March 25 at 4:00pm and the fee is $25 for the “Kick-off” Dinner and $30 for both the “Kick-off“ Dinner and one-day conference only.  Applications should be turned in at the Women's Resource Center (Mary Martin 311).

History

The inaugural Women’s Leadership Conference, with the theme Identifying the Leader within You, took place on April 12, 2007, and proved to be a great success. The conference included panel discussions on pathways to leadership, presentations from students in leadership roles, and a variety of break-out sessions. Keynote addresses were made by Dr. Fran Kochan, who presented about mentoring for personal and professional goals, and Ms. Susan Moore, who presented about setting and achieving financial goals.
