Americans assume without question that they should be able to voice their opinions of government and social policy without fear of repercussion.   They also assume that they should not be required to express opinions they do not accept or refrain from criticizing public officials.   Suki Kim spent six months living in a nation in which none of these assumptions holds true.   She taught English to the sons of prominent North Koreans at a most remarkable institution, the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology.   It is a private university in North Korea partially funded by a Christian missionary group.   She will give us insight into the lives of people who live in very different circumstances than we enjoy.

Her novel, The Interpreter, and her investigative memoir, Without You, There Is No Us, are both bestsellers.   She has been interviewed on the Today Show and given a TED talk.   In addition, she has published articles in the New York Times, Harper’s and the New York Review of Books.  She has also received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Fulbright Research Grant and an Open Society Fellowship.
