Director of Institutional Research

As the Director of the Office of Institutional Research, Dr. Matthew Campbell is responsible for providing institutional data and research services to support university-level initiatives and campus departments. Through rigorous data collection and analysis, Campbell and his team provide research-based information to inform decision-making and ongoing policy development throughout the institution. Campbell also serves as the primary data steward for the institution’s required reporting to governmental agencies such as the U.S. Department of Education and the Alabama Commission on Higher Education.

An institutional research professional for more than 15 years, Campbell first joined the Office of Institutional Research as a Graduate Research Assistant in 1997 and returned in 2005 as an Analyst. Since 2011, Campbell has served as the university’s primary data source for many of its strategic initiatives, including institution rankings, SACSCOC reaffirmation of accreditation, program-level accrediting, strategic budgeting and data support to grant-awarding agencies such as the National Science Foundation and the National Institute for Health.

Campbell also played a primary role in improving data quality for the university’s internal framework. His experience includes serving as the lead designer for the student, course-and faculty data sources currently used across the institution to support information programs such as Qlik, OneAuburn and the university’s new Customer Relationship Management, or CRM, platform, Salesforce.

Campbell holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration, a master’s degree in public administration, and a PhD in higher education administration from Auburn University.
