The Harrison School of Pharmacy Universities Fighting World Hunger is the pharmacy school’s chapter of the campus-wide Universities Fighting World Hunger. Universities Fighting World Hunger is Auburn’s student organization leading the War on Hunger. UFWH|Auburn is part of a growing global network of students who are raising their voices collectively in pursuit of a world free from hunger and malnutrition.
UFWH|Auburn began leading the Auburn War on Hunger in 2004 in partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme. Since its inception, UFWH|Auburn has been fighting hunger and malnutrition both locally and globally through awareness-raising, fundraising, and campus and community service, including Hunger Awareness Week, partnership with the Food Bank of East Alabama, active participation in the annual UFWH Summit, and support and involvement in other anti-hunger related initiatives on campus including Beat Bama Food Drive, Campus Kitchens Project, and the Campus Food Security initiative.
Because all academic disciplines have something to contribute to ending hunger and malnutrition, the UFWH|Auburn chapter is composed of one representative from all schools and colleges and major student groups on campus, as well as facilitators and members-at-large who help to carry out the group’s mission. Since school and college representatives are tasked with leading subcommittees within their own units, everyone on campus has an opportunity to contribute. We invite all students to check us out and become part of a dynamic global movement to end hunger both here at home and around the globe.
UFWH meets monthly and offers many different opportunities for members and the entire school to participate and contribute to the War on Hunger. Along with participating in many “Big Committee” events, other events that we participate in include:
- Multiple canned goods collections throughout the year to support the East Alabama Food Bank, including the “Battle of the Classes” each fall
- Volunteer weekly at Campus Kitchens
- Volunteer at the AUMC the morning of Hargreaves Day to help hungry families in Lee County “go shopping” for necessary food and supplies, along with taking blood pressure, blood glucose, and giving a presentation on immunizations
- Volunteer at various health fairs in the Auburn community
