Harrison School of Pharmacy Receives $125,000 Grant From Cardinal Health

AUBURN UNIVERSITY, Ala. – As part of its continued commitment to supporting future pharmacists, Cardinal Health has given a philanthropic gift of $125,000 to Auburn University’s Harrison School of Pharmacy. The gift is part of a collective $2 million in funding distributed to nine universities through the Cardinal Health Pharmacy Scholarship Program in 2014.

The nine pharmacy schools that were selected to participate in this year's Cardinal Health Pharmacy Scholarship Program were chosen based on their commitment to advancing the independent pharmacy profession. The programs offer curricula focused on operating an independent pharmacy; support student-run chapters of the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA); endorse internship and co-op programs with local independent community pharmacies; and demonstrate high post-graduate placement rates in community pharmacy settings.

“We are honored and excited that Cardinal Health chose the Harrison School of Pharmacy for this award,” said HSOP Dean R. Lee Evans. “The role of the community pharmacist is an important one, especially in the rural areas that make up much of our state and region. We look forward to giving out this annual award to a student-pharmacist interested in furthering the mission of the community pharmacist.”

HSOP will use the award from Cardinal Health to endow an annual student award. An application process will be held each year, focusing on student-pharmacists who are interested in independent practice.

"We know community pharmacists play a critical role in improving the cost-effectiveness of healthcare, and in helping patients better manage their overall health," said Mike Kaufmann, chief executive officer of Cardinal Health's Pharmaceutical segment. "We're proud to support tomorrow's community pharmacy leaders through this scholarship program, and we're inspired by the impact we know they'll have on their patients and communities, when they become pharmacy owners."
