UPCOMING EVENTS

Thursday, October 16th
Dr. Sunny Stalter, AU Department of English
A Woman's Place:Working Women on
the American Expressionist Stage

Student Center 2225, 12:30 p.m.

"This talk discusses the importance of the working woman in American
Expressionist theater of the 1920s. Elmer Rice and Sophie Treadwell
dramatize how urban space acts as an oppressive force in the lives of
female office workers, yet they also envision the ways in which such
figures escaped their routines. Examining these plays helps us
understand what life was like for a new population of female workers,
and why these characters struck such a chord in an age as conflicted
about big business as our own."
