Dr. Barbara Wilder, associate professor in AUSON, spoke to the Community
Advisory Board Nov. . She informed board members regarding
activities and initiatives undertaken at the Nursing Care Clinics
serving
the Auburn Housing Authority (AHA). For six years the clinics have
provided fundamental health promotion/disease prevention, education,
screening and referral services for medically underserved AHA residents.
These activities give Auburn’s nursing students an opportunity
to
develop their skills in providing interdisciplinary health care in
a community
setting while giving them experience with diverse cultures. Each<
month the nursing students and Linda Byrd, clinical instructor, CRNP,
have approximately 200 client visits at the Nursing Care Clinics.
AUSON is laying the groundwork for a new initiative designed to increase
physical activity in African American women living in the AHA.
“We are planning to establish an accessible facility for the
women at
Boykin Community Center,” Wilder stated. “We would like
to have at
least 2 women between the ages of 30 and 70 initially.” The
women
will have a physical assessment to make certain there are no physical
limitations for them, and then they will receive walking shoes and
t-shirts. The emphasis will be improving functional fitness and building
a support system for the participants, who will have an individually
developed
exercise prescription. Guidance will be provided to help them
achieve their personal fitness goals. |
