Special Requirements for Medical Terminology Course

Because of the unusual status of the Medical Terminology section to be offered this spring, namely offering it as a section of HADM 0539 (Topics in Health Administration) HA students planning to take it should note the folowing:

1) You will be able to register for the class only through your assigned HA faculty adviser.

2) You may use the class only to fulfill the VOED 0352 requirement, not as a regular 053- seminar, because the Medical Terminology offering will not be a seminar class.

If you have any questions about these issues, please see your HA adviser.

Medical Terminology to Be Offered

As many of you may be aware, VOED 0352, Medical Terminology, has been discontinued.

However, for those needing the course, the same course material will be offered Spring 2000 as 5-hour HADM 0539 section and will be taught by Dr. Carol Southern, who taught the VOED 0352 course.

HADM 0539 is a "generic" course number which students may take more than once as long as it covers a different topic. HA Students may use this special course offering only as a substitute for VOED 0352, not a replacement for one of their two reguired 053- seminars.

What the status of the course will be beyond Spring 2000 is not certain at this time, so students who have not had it, especially Juniors and Seniors, would be well advised to plan on taking it Spring of 2000.

Important Scheduling Changes

Please note following scheduling changes in HA course offerings:
  1. HA 360, Introduction to Health Administration, will be offered Winter 2000 instead of Spring 2000.
  2. HA 320, Health Policy, will be offered Spring 2000, not Winter 2000, as had been previously announced. For further information on course plans for the 1999-2000, see our schedule page.

Please keep these changes in mind if you need either course.

Reminder on Advising and Registration

This quarter, in keeping with University-wide efforts to promote a smooth transition to the semester system, all HA students will again find themselves "blocked" until they see an HA adviser.

Junior and Senior students with last names beginning A-K should contact Dr. Burns. All others should contact Dr. McEldowney. Both faculty will offer special office hours for this purpose. If you are a "new" junior with last name A-K previously advised by Dr. McEldowney, please be sure Dr. Burns has your plan of study before seeing him.

Students who saw an HA faculty adviser last spring and created a plan of study, and who propose to make relatively minor changes in it, should be able to be advised relatively quickly. If you are new to to the Health Administration Program, or have not previously filed a plan of study, please fill one out and bring it with you when you see your adviser.

HealthLink Donates Computer

A donation from HealthLink Inc. will help the HA Program move forward in instructing students in use of contemporary presentation methods. HealthLink President William Augustine noted that the donation was made as part of "our support towards educating tomorrow's healthcare leaders."

Health Link, Inc., a full-service health care information technology consulting firm, has donated a Toshiba laptop computer to be used in multimedia lectures to classes, as well as student presentations.

Thanks to HealthLink and to HA Alum Lindsey Jarrell ('95), who was instrumental in obtaining this donation and who is also supporting the restoration of the journal Hospital Topics, which had been cut from the Auburn University library holdings.

Thoughts from an Alumni

Recent graduate David Funderburg III, now working as a Staffing Consultant for Romac International, offers the following thought on a different kind of placement opportunity:

I just want to shed some light, or should I say make a suggestion, to all of those students coming out into the job market soon. A great avenue to venture into is the recruiting world.

I'm doing IT recruiting and the money is great, simply because the industry is full of opportunities in this arena. Another option is the healthcare or pharmaceutical world. I have not recruited for this side of the house, but my company, Romac International, is doing very well at it. Our website is www.romac.com; I would suggest anyone interested in HR to venture this avenue.

Important Correction on Start of Classes

For several weeks, an error in the OASIS system has erroneously listed the start of fall classes as September 24. This is not correct, and the University is attempting to spread the word about this error.

The correct date is September 21. Please share this information with any students you know who may be making plans based on the earlier, but incorrect, date.

E-Mail Tip

An increasing number of students are choosing to use a non-A.U. e-mail account (mindspring, hotmail, etc.) for their primary e-mail address. However, many official A.U. listings of e-mail addresses use only the official A.U. e-mail addresses.

If you prefer to use a non-A.U. account, you can help your friends, instructors, and advisers better stay in touch with you by forwarding mail from your A.U. account to your preferred account. This easy procedure is explained in a page provided by the AU Technology Hotline. Take a look if you'd like to learn how to "forward."

The announcement states:

"Auburn University invites applications for a one-year position at the rank of visiting assistant professor or instructor in the field of health administration (HA). We expect to recruit for a tenure-track position in this field in the fall and welcome applications from candidates who plan to apply for that position. Candidates who can show evidence of ability to teach specialized courses in health administration, health policy, and health care finance preferred. Teaching is in an AUPHA-affiliated health administration undergraduate program within the Political Science Department. Applicants will be judged on potential for research as well as teaching. A.B.D.'s who have not completed all requirements for the Ph.D. by September 1, 1999, will be considered for the rank of instructor."

"Auburn is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer; and applications from women and minorities are especially encouraged.
