A New Year's Message from the Outgoing Program Director

On January 1, 1999, my colleague Dr. Rene' McEldowney will assume the office of Program Director. This change has been planned since February, 1998.

For the last several years, it has been my pleasure to serve the HA Program during an exciting period of expansion and development. During that time, a great many individuals have worked together for the betterment of our program, most especially my faculty colleagues, the members of the HA Advisory Council, the officers of the HA Alumni Organization, and the officers of the HHAO. Their efforts have been most sincerely appreciated.

In the future, I expect to continue my involvement with the program through teaching, advising and serving as HA Website Coordinator.

My best wishes to the new Program Director as she begins her work. I hope those of you who have been so helpful to our program in the past will continue your support, and that many others will join the effort to continuously refine and improve the HA Program. May we all join in the coming year in a new period of progress for Health Administration under the capable leadership of Dr. Rene' McEldowney.

Welcome Back!

As we start the 1998-1999 academic year, you will notice many changes at A.U. The OASIS system is now your key to course and registration information. Our courses are now prefixed with " HADM" rather than "HA." And all the old course numbers you knew are now prefixed with a "0", so "HA 320" has become "HADM 0320", "HA 360" is now "HADM 0360", and so on. The HA pages on our Website are under revision to reflect these changes, so please b ear with us as the transition occurs. Please drop us an e-mail if you have any questions about these changes.

In regard to the OASIS system, there are a couple of errors in the on-line University catalogue listing for our Program. Two non-existent classes, HADM 0420 and HADM 0421, are listed. The correct versions of these classes, also listed, are HADM 0 320 and HADM 0361.

Drs. Jenkins and McEldowney will both be on leave this fall, so all advising issues should be directed to Dr. Burns. His office hours for Fall 1998 will be on Wednesdays, starting September 23, as follows:

  • 9:00-11:30 a.m.--appointments only. Sign up on the door to his office, 7094 Haley, at least the day before.
  • 1-3:30 p.m.--walk-ins. No appointment necessary.
If you cannot make any of these times, please contact Dr. Burns for alternate arrangements. Also, it may be possible to resolve some advising issues via e-mail.

Have a good quarter!

Job/Internship Opportunity

HA Graduate Tracy Miles sends the following information about a possible part-time job/internship opportunity:

Lanier Memorial, hospital located in Valley, Alabama, is interested in hiring an HA student to work part-time in their marketing department and then a possible internship.

The part-time position could begin this quarter. The student could work until their internship begins either this Spring or Summer. This is a paid position. Lanier Memorial is where I did my internship in Summer of 96. This is a growing facility and offers great possibilities for the right student. I would like to talk to you about any of your students that you feel would be interested. At this time, I do not have an exact job description. Ideally until their internship begins with Lanier Memorial, the student could work 20 to 30 hours a week. Projects would include organizing a community health fair, promoting a community health mobile van, preparing news releases, organizing hospital meetings (both inhouse and public groups), and assisting with patient care surveys.

Students can fax their resume to my or Traci Hood's attention at (334) 756-6698. Traci Hood is the Marketing Director for Lanier Memorial and will be the student's direct supervisor.

If you have an internship scheduled for Spring or Summer 1998 and are interested in the internship aspect of this opportunity, please talk first with Dr. McEldowney about this before contacting the facility.
